ST170 manifold

Postby evan » Fri Jun 06, 2008 8:52 pm

So as per tradition of 170s, my intake manifolds runner control went on holiday. Nothing to loose right so i whipped it out to have a look at it. Very simple workings inside with a possition switch with contacts much like that of a relay.

Cleaned them up (no visible burning), resoldered two joint that looked a but suspect, greased the gears and resealed it.

Put it back in last night and holidays over. Keep yaall posted on longevity, but concidering it wasnt working at all and no DTCs yet, id say mission accomplished.

The purchase of a size 10 ratchet spanner is recommended :smt003

Was yours throwing a code or did the unit just stop working?

Mine has been throwing the code P01518, IMRC stuck in closed position (or maybe open can't remember) But I've checked the manifold and it still works ok and the car feels no different. I've been thinking maybe its an intermittent electrical break or dodgy contact that has been causing the problem.

I had mine die too, but it was the controller unit that died.

P1518 was the code it had.

Thats the code yes. it would pop up from time to time. I used to clear it with bluefin. Eventually the time taken to a dtc became shorter until it just came on instantly. I read once that the computer monitors the time it takes to activate, and any delay brings up an error. I had a look what it did at the end. It would pull manifold closed on start up, but just let go seconds later.

Brilliant thread, thanks!!!

That motor does indeed look like an RC car motor. I've got a 9 turn double at home...wonder if it'll work. :D

LOL, I said the same thing to my father, I used to race rc cars years back, my brother still does, I'm sure we've got a couple mod motors lying around...

I checked the brushes in the motor as well, they still had plenty of life left in them and the commutator was clean and smooth, better than any rc car motor I've ever looked at, but then it has spent its life sealed in a box.
