Project Quad Bike *Not Ford related*

Postby Scouse » Fri Jan 31, 2014 7:05 pm

Ok so I know its not a Ford but wanted to just show you all my little project I took on during my time at home in January
I was at the house at the Vaal river (where the bike usually stays because of the massive areas she can ride) and I decided to get the bike back to the house as Ive been saying it needs a good clean and makeover for ages

So we load it up onto my sister in laws bakkie and ask her to take it home for me

The next day I started on it

This is how it looked before I started and is pretty much how its looked its whole life lol

Image

Image

So now I started to strip it down so I could assess and decide what I was actually gonna do

Image

Image

Then it was out into the garden for a proper cleaning and wash (this took me a good few hours believe it or not as I had to clean every nook and cranny to make sure all of the dirt and grease and oil etc was gone)

Image

Image

Then it was off with the exhaust and it was washed and sanded and resprayed and the chrome heat guard all nicely cleaned up

Image

The other things like the chain was soaked and scrubbed and cleaned till it looked brand new, and then it was pre-oiled until assembly
The chain guard was also removed and sprayed

Then I sprayed the side belt cover

Image

Then I received the handle bars and the front nudge bar back from powdercoating

Image

Then I decided to let the poor little bike breath properly and fitted a nice little cone filter :)

Image

Next all the plastics were flattened with some 600 grit paper and prepped and wiped down.
Then they were ready for the special plastics primer and then a nice pink 2K paint with all of the relevant mixes of hardeners and flexi mutti

Image

Main body spraywork done

Image

Image

These are the other parts completed with spray work

Image

Then the re-assembly started and it started to take shape nicely
All new bolts and screws were purchased and fitted to the bike for the plastics etc

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

And here are some finished pics before my wife got hold of it hahaha

Image

Image

Image

Then my daughter decided she wanted a pic of her with her new very "girly" quad

Image

Now if you look closely enough you will see that the entire body of the plastics now has a "diamante' border all the way around it, my wife went ape with them, but must admit it came out better than i expected. Im not sure if its on any of these pics but the headlight surround also has the diamante border around it.

Image

Image

Image

Then of course, safety first, so I went and bought her a new matching helmet :)

Image

So that about it folks
All in all it took me 8 days from start to finish, waiting for the powdercoating and allowing a good 3 days for the paint to harden nicely etc
Forgot to mention that the wheels were also sprayed, there I used a nice hard epoxy appliance white paint. The edge of the wheel rim will get a small diamante stripe in green to match the handlebar front cover and grips.
The green was done to break the pink and purple a bit.
The new grips i fitted were from Full throttle and are proper MX grips, I also bought the bike another brand new battery so we didnt have to worry about kick starting the thing again hahaha
The seat was also recovered in a nice purple to match the purple foot sections
The petrol cap was also done with an epoxy appliance white.

The front headlight is now fitted with duel green LED bulbs and looks pretty damn wicked when the lights are on, and also during the day when its on it matches the other small bits of green

So thats about it really, I enjoyed every minute of it and the best part was that my daughter was soooo appreciative of what I had done, that alone is more than enough reward for me

Total cost for entire project - R1500......But at least I know its now running 100% and will last another good few years until she hands it down to her little sister.

I know the colons and look etc. aren't everyone's cup of tea but my daughter just loves pink and purple, so she got what she wanted

Cheers

nice work :) colours are... interesting. haha.

iv never seen those foot rests before, its a pretty clever idea for a kiddies quad. my one friend made something like that from aluminium and angle iron for the quad his wife used to ride.

Do you use a special kind of paint on those very flexible plastic body panels?
Project looked great at the end!

You use a special undercoat/primer and you also add a special additive to the paint when u mix it, thats what makes the paint flexible.
Same thing they use on car bumpers etc :)
