Ford Escort XR3 modifications

Postby Mr Carstens » Wed Jul 03, 2013 11:58 pm

Hi guys, I saw a old Top Gear test between the Vw Golf mk1 GTi and the Ford Escort mk3 XR3, and Jeremy says that the only difference between the two cars was the owners. My question is what is required for an XR3 to smoke a modern 2l 8v Mp9 mk1? This got me thinking a bit as you see a mk1 on every corner but hardly any XR3's, and that's sad in my eyes. So I was thinking of getting an XR3 and modding it a bit to hand it to a mk1? My mods in mind was either working the standard CVH 1600 motor or fitting a 2l 16v EGI/iRS motor. What I really want to know is how easy is it to fit the 16v motor? Cause if my thoughts is correct, the Lasers came out with a CVH motor and in a 2l 16v form too? So the mounts should be the same? The idea was the "EGI" motor with 45mm sides, worked head with cams and bumped up comp. But I just want to know if the mounts will be the same or what is required for it to fit? And if not that route what mods is reccomended for the CVH motor?
Thanks guys for reading my post and for any help and advice. Wanting to bring a great car back to its former glory and show these Golf yankies a thing or two. Lol. Thumbs up guys

HI Mr Carstens.

this can be done, as we own a XR3 with a FE motor in. basically all mounts had to be manufactured. and the mazda 323 sedan (was the 2L 16V version that ended badly one evening) which was the doner for the xr3 had a "crossmember" running underneath the gearbox/motor from the firewall to the underside of radiator.

up to now the car is simply just a running version, as we just slapped some 40 webers on to get it started, and branch with freeflow. it goes realy nicely, but the motor still has to be sorted in terms of jetting and timing. (also converted the distributor to a module system, as it use to be EFI)

personally i would rather go for the 2L zetec version, as the motor bolts on to the cvh gearbox, as with the mazda the gearbox had to be changed aswell.

if all else fails, you can buy the XR3 from us.

i cant upload photos at work, but will mail them to anyone willing to upload

Can you please email me some pics to

Did you use the x-member of the 323 aswell? And what had to be done for the 323 gearbox to fit and work?

Hi sir, you have a number of options

The rsturbo escorts maybe worth a look to see how their engines were modded to run turbo, there are tone of parts for the cvh like cams webber carbs ect.

Just a case of budget

Mazda fe is a good option, but if your goal is to smack a near stock golf it may be overkill.

used the 323 crossmember.
had to re-inforce the underside of the body under the radiator.

the mazda box we made new mountings, the chassis member had to be cut a little, as the gearbox sits higher.
you can fir the stuff without cutting, but motor will sit VERY low, and prone to get the sump knocked to pieces.

pics have been mailed
