Some issues- Ford Ikon 1.6XL

Postby unobeat » Mon Feb 08, 2016 8:36 am

Hello Guys

Please advise/assist with these issues i am having on the above mentioned car.

1. Car struggles to start(hot/cold), it only starts easier on 2nd try when you depress the accelerator to the floor.
2. At times, it does not idle stable @900rpm, its like it is hunting(rev up and down between 300-800rpm)
3. Struggles to rev up from 2000rpm, it splutters a lot, jerks. It is not a smooth rev up from bottom rev range.
4. When coming to a stop sign/robot and you clutch in while slowing down, the revs drop and it switches off- but remaining on, on the cluster. Have to kick start it to get going again.
5. Speedometer does not work.

I will be doing a service on the car(Oil, filters, plugs, get a new set of plug leads and temperature sensor).
some questions:
1. What oil should i use for this motor, is Shell 15w40 HX5 fine?
2. What is code for petrol filter that i should buy?
3. How do i remove the temperature sensor from the thermostat housing, do i just remove the pin clip that holds it in place and pull it out?
4. What is sump plug number, so that i can buy one from Midas?

Thanks in advance with assistance.

1 - 4 - Could be a couple of items causing the issues. Start by checking for the vacuum lines for leaks, spark plugs or plug leads could be damaged also check the throttle position sensor.
5 - sounds like the speed sensor

I will post a workshop manual for the rocam next week when im back in SA

          Some update on this car.
Firstly thank you all for your positive assistance.

So then, i replaced the spark plugs, Air and fuel filters plus the water temp sensor.
Car now drives normally as it should, no more jerkiness, spluttering and lack of power.
Revs like a 1.6 motor. :hurray: :hurray: :hurray:
Oh and the temperature gauge works so well
          Idle is stable

          Outstanding issues:
          1. Speedometer not working- is this located by the gearbox side, does it need replacing or it could be the wiring?
          2. Car only starts on 2nd crank up and i still need to depress the accelerator.
          3. End of the month i will some fresh oil and filter.
          4. when switching on the car, i dont hear the fuel pump priming and maybe this could be why when i start up it does not start on its own.
I have to depress the the accelerator on 2nd try and it start immediatly.

              1. Where is tje speed sensor located?
              2. Where is the fuel pump, i am guessing it should be on the fisebox?
If so, what number is it?

Fuelpump SB inside the fueltank. I'm not sure if it's reachable from the top, plate under the backseat or if tank has to be dropped to get to it.
