1.3 Rocam inlet manifold upgrade to 1.6 intake + CAI

Postby Eon » Wed Oct 22, 2014 7:27 pm

I bought a 1.6 Rocam intake with injectors and fuel rail that I want to slap on my 1.3 motor. Before I get it cleaned up and spend cash on getting the injectors serviced, I would like to know the following:

1) The runners are thicker. Will this provide a noticeable power increase or improve the power curve?

2) Are the injectors any different to those on my 1.3 manifold? If so, I might as well just transplant the 1.3's injectors.

3) I want to supplement the above with a proper CAI. Motorcade's "CAI" doesn't look cold enough. I want something like on p.10 on this thread viewtopic.php?f=94&t=76508&start=90 if anyone in the Cape could assist.

4) Will I need a remap?

Looks like I'm talking to myself here, so I went and did it anyway.

Image

The results were... well, to be honest not so great.
I tried the 1600 manifold with the stock airbox attached, and it didn't feel any faster, maybe even a bit lazier. I blamed it on the ECU still 'learning' the new intake because I had the battery disconnected during the whole operation.

Image

After that, we did the induction. I didn't have enough bends and fittings to do a proper CAI, so I just made a normal induction pipe with the K&N Apollo filter attached. It sounds mad, but I'm still not too sure if I made any gains.
Here's the final product

This brings me to my final question: Will a remap (R600 @ KSD) unlock the benefits of these mods, or am I better off with the 1300 manifold?

honestly mate don't think a rempa will help. I'm not to clued up on the rocams but wouldn't be more worth it to convert the internals to 1.6 ? or even if possible over bore ?

What is your end goal ? cause if its lots of power I'd even look at a motor transplant. know the ford Ka's (Think its very similar mounts/engine bay) have changed out to the Duratec 2.0

At this time I'm not considering any major mechanical alterations, because of the low milege (80k kms). Yes a 1.6 is all I've ever wanted in my bakkie, but that would mean a block, piston, head and ECU transplant. Not to mention the 1.6 gearbox which has longer ratios. All that will remain then is the sub assembly.

That kind of job would also require some major admin regarding engine numbers and registration etc.

It would make sense if my engine had high milege on it, but give it a few more years :D

1 3 Rocam inlet manifold upgrade to 1 6 intake CAI

Postby WilliamSl » Fri Mar 11, 2016 5:22 pm

I have a performer intake and it has similar fitting holes. It looks like you need the following.
1 3/4" NPT plug
2 1/2" NPT plugs
1 1/4" NPT plug
3 1/8" NPT plugs

Never tried that move myself. It will be interesting to see what it does. I did a head flow and uprated valve springs on a 1.3 Bantam. Revved it to 8000 after removing the rev limiter from the Bosch ECU. Ran consistent 16.5 on the quarter mile...

Hi Eric,

Please add some pics of the intake? What are the plugs for? Do you have it for sale?

Very impressive! I also had my head flowed. What cam are you using?

Cam cut by Vanderlinde developments. Got a serious lumpy idle lol! But it is not my Bakkie. The owner is Francois. He is the sales manager at Dutton Motors Sasolburg.

What lifters did you use? I had a 266° cam with 6.4mm lift. I eventually took it out because my lifters werent coping and the driveability wasn't as good as with the SWR cam. Gotta love that lumpy idle though!

Hey Eon. It was solid lifters and the cam were used with a custom vernier pulley. If I remember correctly the workshop manager at Vereeniging Auto organized it. I used it on my Fezz RSi aswell. But that was like 7 years ago.....

Awesome man! I was advised to do a solid lifter conversion with vernier gear, but the bakkie is my daily and I was a bit hesita t towards the high maintainence that goes with solid lifters (correct me if I'm wrong).

Did you ever have 1.3 on a dyno? Figures?

Hey Eon. It's been many years so I do not think I will be able to find the old Dyno Sheets....

Nah the solid lifters is ok, cause the cam runs on roller bearings.
