Rocam Vernier Cam Gear

Postby Eon » Mon Dec 15, 2014 10:40 am

Hi all,

I've been doing some reading up on adjustable vernier cam gears. *Aparrently* it would be beneficial to install and tune a vernier cam gear when using aftermarket cams (SWR), and especially when the cylinder head has been worked or skimmed (mine has been ported and flowed once, and skimmed twice).

I'd like to hear your take and personal experiences with these devices, especially on SOHC motors.

I'm still looking to unlock some more power after only pushing 65kW at the CSTOC dyno day :(

Maybe look at Piper Cams website. They should have available.
Would have sugested Burton, but they don't list the Rocam.
Also speak to the Lacost (Lotus 7 type replica) guys as they use the Rocam for racing. http://www.locost.co.za/

Thank you sir!

I know of someone in the cape who makes them for R300 through an exchange (not sure how trustworthy though).

My question remains, will it be worth it? Power gains?

By itself, I don't think you will see any power gains. But since you already have a cam, it can now be dialed in better to deliver more top end power or better low down torque. But, you are going to need some dyno time and a tuner who knows what's going on around him/her.
I suppose that with any change in cams from standard, it will be worth while adding the vernier gear. Just take the ST170 gains as an example by adding it. I think Cossieboy has it in his ST170 thread?

Cossieboy only retarded the exhaust cam on his ST170. With the 8 valve SOHC rocam that's obviously not possible.

I also thought of getting a SWR Stage 2 cam and using the vernier to move the curve down the rev range and maybe raise my rev limiter a bit.
With my current cam the jump from 1st to 2nd lands me just out of the power band (4000rpm) when shifting at 6000 rpm.

I will be suprised if you can land a stage 2 cam from SWR. I requested one before.

Yeah, I also tried but they stopped importing them.

I corresponded with Flouwford a while back, and he said he could do me a cam similar to the SWR2, but after a few messages I seemed to have lost him.

Probably got tired of my sh1t #-o

Yes! This is the guy I was talking about. Definitely giving him a call and hopefully his work isn't too bad.
